Formula 0511: Blended Powdered Acid Cleaner

This formula is designed  to rapidly remove carbonate scale and corrosion products. The combination of cleaners create a rapid effective cleaning. Formula 0511 is designed for cleaning stainless steel, ferrous and nonferrous equipment. It will remove mineral scale, rust and other corrosion products.

FEATURES:

An easy and safe to handle dry powder.
A blend of acids and wetting agents for increased penetration.
Includes inhibitors to prevent corrosion to copper, brass, aluminum or steel surfaces.
Quickly and safely dissolves deposits of scale.
Safe to use on stainless steel. No chloride content like hydrochloric acid or muratic acid which harm stainless steel.
Will not harm gaskets, seals and packing.
Material of choice to use with galvanized surfaces.
Includes oil and grease solvents.

USES:

Recommended for scale removal and cleaning of:
Heat exchange equipment and especially plate exchangers such as those offered by Multistack, Mueller, Alfa Laval, and Trantor Superchanger.
Cooling towers without harm to wood, rubber based paints, or valve packing.
Boilers, hot water heaters, condensers, and engine jackets.
Stainless Steel heat exchange surfaces.

SAFE TO HANDLE:

Can be safely handled with ordinary care.  Much safer to handle and use than a mineral acid. However, when using this material, it is recommended that in addition to rubber gloves, aprons, safety goggles, and  face shields, the applicator have clean potable water close by. The best first aid for contact is to IMMEDIATELY get this material off the skin. Do not allow this material to get in the eyes. If it does get in the eyes, flush the eyes with clean cool water for a FULL FIFTEEN  MINUTES before seeking medical attention. Please see MSDS for further information.

Formula 0511: Blended Powdered Acid Cleaner

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:

Flush: Drain and flush the equipment to remove as much loose scale and other debris as possible. If deposits are oil coated, an additional pretreatment may be necessary.

Isolate: Check for open connections, leakage, drain, and especially shutoff valves to prevent loss of chemical and contact with other equipment.

Vent: If the equipment to be cleaned is enclosed, such as boilers, shell and tube condensers, etc., be sure that a vent is provided. The reaction of carbonate scales with acid liberates carbon dioxide gas, pressure  can increase if not allowed to escape.  Vented gas should not contact open flame. In certain reactions  hydrogen gas may be given off. Hydrogen gas is flammable.

Dosage: Mild Cleaning can be made with a 2% cleaning solution by weight. For normal cleaning a solution of 5 to 10% solution is recommended. Approximate solution strengths are:

2% solution        16 pounds  per 100 gallons

5% solution        40 pounds  per 100 gallons

10% solution        80 pounds  per 100 gallons

Reaction (Product Consumed): One pound of Formula 0511 will dissolve approximately 0.5 to 0.6 pounds of calcium carbonate scale. It will also remove sulfate scale and iron oxides at a somewhat lower rate. The concentration of the solution lowers as it reacts with the scale and should be noted from time to time by checking the pH. Maintain a 5.5. pH or less throughout the cleaning procedure. As the acid dissolves the scale, it is neutralized. If the scale deposit is heavy, additional acid may need to be added to maintain the strength of the cleaning solution.

Heat: Heat is optional. However, for on line cleaning, optimum results are obtained when the water is preheated to 120-140 o F before the addition of Formula 0511.  Please note:This is preheated.Never heat an acid solution while firing the boiler. The high heat at the point of fire will greatly increase the acid activity at only the point of heat; while destroying the corrosion inhibitor. These corrosion inhibitors are added to help protect the steel surfaces from acid attack while the acid cleans the scale deposits.  Rapid metal corrosion may occur at temperatures above 180 o F; high temperatures are common at the heat transfer point.

Preparation: Readily dissolves in water.
Always ADD ACID TO WATER to reduce the  splatter.
For larger units, cover surfaces with water, add Formula 0511 and mix.
For smaller units you may mix in a container and circulated with a pump.
Formula 0511 is the preferred choice to use when cleaning galvanized surfaces, because the affect on zinc is much less than hydrochloric acid or muratic acid. However, it is recommended that the percent concentration be lowered to 2 to 5% with additional acid added as the cleaning solution becomes used. Maintain a close pH check. The maximum contact time is four hours followed by a clear water flush.

Contact Time: Circulate 2-4 hours. Do not to allow temperature to get above 140o F.

Drain & Flush: It is very important that the equipment be flushed to remove the acid with water after cleaning. If this step is omitted the acid will continue to work and corrosion of the metal is likely. If any deposits remain after flushing,  repeat procedure. Neutralize the acid and pacify the surface of the steel against flash corrosion. Flush & drain.
